In the last 30 years, the rapidly growing sex trade has been massively “industrialized” worldwide. Millions of women and children have been converted into sexual commodities. This aspect of globalization involves an entire range of issues, including economic exploitation, sexual oppression, capital accumulation, international migration, and unequal development and such related conditions as racism and poverty. These “consumers” in the economic North nowhere access to “exotic” and young bodies worldwide. An example like in Nepal, women and children were put directly on regional or international markets without the country experiencing a significant expansion of local prostitution.
It is helpful to understand why global issues because people should know themselves and where they come from. Being able to see the world through other eyes is of much importance. Being able to understand the issues that can be interconnected can be anyone's stp to solve problems. While you cannot equate prostitution and sex trafficking, there is definitely a link, particularly found in those who have been arrested. And, while there is a very small—but very vocal—minority of men and women who willingly choose prostitution as a lifestyle, the demand for commercial sex far outweighs the willing supply, a disparity that will necessitate the unwilling supply to meet the demand. Very few studies have calculated what percentage of people arrested for prostitution were willing and what percentage were, in reality, trafficked. : we can begin to see when and where are interfering in a system to make a change.
