Sex trafficking has been going on since the dawn of civilization. It originated during the second wave of the women’s movement in the 1980s, when female activists started protesting the exploitation of women and girls in prostitution and pornography. Whenever a woman or girl — or man or boy — was without status or protection, he or she could have been subjected to sexual exploitation. At about the same time, another group emerged who called themselves “sex workers.” They wanted the right to redefine voluntary prostitution as “sex work,” and they opposed being seen as victims of sex trafficking.
Many victims become romantically involved with someone who then forces and manipulates them into prostitution. Others are ruled in with false promises of a job, such as modeling or dancing. Vulnerable populations are frequently targeted by traffickers, including runaway and homeless youth, as assault, war, or social discrimination. Some are forced to sell their body by their parents or other family member. They do this to profit from the money. Sexual abuse in childhood and later a hopeless feeling of being trapped in “the life” inevitably leads to the horrors of drug addiction. Many traffickers will say they want a relationship with the victims and lead them on making them think they would really be with them and marry them until they are sure that the victim has fallen for their words and just drug them. Most of the time this is really how the victims are being used to get into prostitution. All the false promises they were being told made them think it was all real especially because they would target those who had less.
